Every square foot needs to earn its rent.
Physical retail is high-cost because of rent and staff. You'll learn revenue per square foot (is this location paying for itself?), inventory turnover (are you stuck with dead stock?), shrinkage (how much are you losing to theft, damage, markdown?), and footfall conversion (what % of people who walk past actually enter?). You'll also understand sell-through rate (does this product sell fast enough to stay in stock?), category margin (which categories are actually profitable after all costs?), and the metrics that tell you whether to stay, expand, or close a location.
Gross margin tells you how much money is left after paying for what you sold. It's one of the most important numbers in any business.
