Opening and Closing Your Till Each Day
The complete daily checklist for AskBiz POS — from logging in with a cashier PIN and setting a float, to reconciling cash and reviewing the day's performance at close.
Key Takeaways
- Each till session starts with a cashier PIN login and opening float entry.
- AskBiz tracks every transaction during the session and calculates expected cash at close.
- Closing correctly ensures accurate daily reports and a clean audit trail.
- Staff with 'PIN set' status (visible in the Staff page) are ready to open the till immediately.
Who's ready to open the till today
Before the first till session of the day, check the Staff page under Operations to confirm all your cashiers have 'PIN set' status. In this account, Lee cashier (last login 02/06/2026) and james (last login 30/05/2026) both show 'PIN set' — meaning they can log in to the till immediately. If a cashier's PIN isn't set, click Edit on their account and assign one before they start their shift. A cashier without a PIN cannot open a till session and cannot process sales.
Step 1 — Morning check before opening
Before clicking Open till, run a five-minute morning check: (1) View the Overview with Yesterday selected to see how the previous day closed. (2) Check the Stock Alerts section for any out-of-stock items — remove these from quick-keys if needed. (3) Confirm the Branch filter is set to the correct location if you manage multiple branches. (4) Verify your receipt printer is connected and has paper. Only then hand the till over to the first cashier of the day.
Step 2 — Opening the till session
Click the orange 'Open till' button at the top of any POS screen. The cashier enters their personal PIN — this links all subsequent transactions to their account. AskBiz then prompts for the opening float: count the cash in the drawer and enter the exact total. Once confirmed, the till is live and ready for sales. If your branch has multiple tills, each till opens as a separate session — each cashier opens their own session with their own PIN and their own float.

Start for free →Step 3 — During the day
Cashiers process sales normally — searching or scanning products, applying any discounts, and completing payment by cash, M-Pesa, or card. For cash management during the day, record any cash drops (removing excess cash for banking) or petty cash payments through the till's Cash in/Cash out function. If a customer needs a refund, process it through the Returns flow rather than giving cash directly — this keeps the session's expected cash total accurate.
Step 4 — Closing the till at end of shift
When the cashier's shift ends, click Close till. AskBiz shows the session summary: total cash sales, total M-Pesa, total card, opening float, and expected cash in drawer. The cashier counts the physical cash and enters the actual count. If the actual matches the expected, the session closes cleanly. If there's a variance, it's flagged for the manager. Both outcomes are recorded in the Audit trail. The cashier cannot manipulate this count — the expected figure is calculated by AskBiz based on the session's transactions.
Step 5 — End of day manager review
After all cashiers have closed their tills, the manager reviews the day's performance on the POS Overview with Today selected. Revenue, Sales count, Gross profit, and Margin tell you whether it was a good day. Check the Staff Performance section to see each cashier's contribution. If any variances were flagged at till close, investigate them in the Audit trail now — memories are freshest immediately after the shift. Finish by switching to Yesterday tomorrow morning and the cycle begins again.
