Creating Custom Segments
Segment your customers, products, or orders into groups to compare performance, spot patterns, and target the right audiences.
What is a segment?
A segment is a filtered subset of your data β customers, orders, or products that match a set of criteria you define. For example: customers who bought more than three times in the last 90 days, orders over Β£200 from London postcodes, or products in the 'Accessories' category with a margin below 20%. Segments let you compare the behaviour and performance of different groups, identify your most and least valuable subsets, and focus your analysis on the areas that matter most.
Creating a segment
Go to Analyse β Segments β New Segment. Select the entity type (Customers, Orders, or Products), then add filter conditions using the condition builder. Conditions include: numeric filters (revenue greater than, order count less than), date filters (first order before, last order after), category or tag filters, and channel filters (Shopify only, Amazon only, or cross-channel). Give your segment a name and click Save. Your segment is now available in reports, the AI chat, and metric deep-dives.
Using segments in analysis
Once saved, segments appear as filter options throughout AskBiz. In the main dashboard, click the Segment dropdown at the top to filter all metrics to a specific group. In the AI chat, you can reference a segment directly: 'What is the average order value for my VIP customers segment?' In reports, you can compare metrics between two segments side by side β for example, comparing the churn rate of subscription customers versus one-time buyers.
Dynamic vs static segments
All AskBiz segments are dynamic β they recalculate every time they are applied, based on the current state of your data. A segment defined as 'customers with more than 3 orders in the last 90 days' will automatically include new customers who hit that threshold and drop customers who fall below it as time passes. This means your segment definitions stay relevant without manual updates. If you need a static snapshot (e.g. the exact list of customers who were VIP on a specific date), use the Export function to download the segment as a CSV.
