Measuring Email Segmentation Performance
How to track whether your email segments are outperforming your full list and where to focus segmentation effort.
Why measure segmentation performance
Segmentation is only worth the effort if targeted sends outperform broadcast sends. Measuring this ensures you're investing time in segments that move the needle — and dropping segments that don't justify the complexity.
Key metrics per segment
For each segment, track:
| Metric | Why it matters |
|--------|----------------|
| Open rate (CTOR) | Relevance of subject line to this segment |
| Click rate | Content relevance |
| Conversion rate | Offer relevance |
| Revenue per email | Overall segment value |
| Unsubscribe rate | Whether you're over-messaging this segment |
In AskBiz, go to Email → Segments and select any segment to see these figures broken down by campaign.
Benchmark segments against your list average
A segment is performing well if it beats your list-wide average on revenue per email (RPE) and CTOR. Calculate the uplift:
Segment uplift = (Segment RPE − List average RPE) ÷ List average RPE × 100
An uplift of 20%+ justifies the segmentation effort. Below 5% suggests the segment definition isn't meaningful enough.
High-value segments to prioritise
Based on industry data and AskBiz user benchmarks, these segments consistently outperform:
1. VIP customers (top 10% by lifetime value): 2–4× higher RPE
2. Recent purchasers (bought in last 30 days): 3× higher conversion rate
3. Browse abandoners: 5–8× higher conversion rate vs broadcast
4. Cart abandoners: 10–15× higher conversion rate vs broadcast
5. Engaged non-purchasers (opens but hasn't bought): good acquisition targets with high intent
Start with segments 3–5 if you haven't implemented automated flows yet — they deliver the highest ROI for the effort.
Segment decay
Segments lose performance over time as the audience gets used to receiving targeted content. Signs of segment decay:
- CTOR declining month-over-month for the same segment
- Unsubscribe rate rising within the segment
- Conversion rate declining despite stable open rates
Countermeasures: refresh your creative, test new offers, or restructure the segment definition. In AskBiz, use Email → Segments → Trend to visualise CTOR over time per segment.
