How to Filter Expenses by Category

Step-by-step instructions for using the category filter chips in the AskBiz Expenses tab to isolate spending in any single expense category.

Key Takeaways

  • Tap a category chip to show only expenses in that category — the list updates instantly.
  • Tap the same chip again to deselect it and return to the full list.
  • Category chips work alongside the search bar and date range filter for multi-dimensional filtering.

Where the Category Chips Are

The category filter chips are a horizontally scrollable row of pill-shaped buttons located in the filter toolbar of the Expenses tab, just below the Category Breakdown bar and above the expenses list. Each chip displays the name of one expense category. Because there are 14 categories, the row extends beyond the screen width — swipe left on the chip row to reveal categories that are off screen to the right. All 14 categories have a chip.

Activating a Category Filter

To filter by a category, tap its chip once. The chip changes colour from its resting state (typically light grey with dark text) to its active state (typically a filled indigo or brand-colour background with white text). The expenses list below updates immediately to show only expenses assigned to that category. The list header also updates to show a count of matching expenses. If you have also set a date range or typed a search term, the filtered results respect all active constraints simultaneously.

Deactivating the Filter

To remove the category filter and return to the full list, tap the active chip a second time. It reverts to its resting style and the full expense list reappears, subject to any other active filters. Alternatively, if you want to quickly clear all active filters at once — chips, date range, and search text — look for a Clear Filters or Reset button that may appear in the toolbar when any filter is active. Tapping it removes all filter constraints in one action.

Using Chips With the Category Breakdown Bar

The stacked Category Breakdown bar at the top of the Expenses tab is also interactive. Tapping a colour segment in the breakdown bar activates the corresponding category chip filter automatically, just as if you had tapped the chip manually. This means you can glance at the bar, notice that Marketing and Ads looks larger than expected, and tap that segment to immediately drill into the individual transactions making up that total. The chip row will scroll to show the now-active Marketing and Ads chip highlighted.
