Benchmarking Against Industry Averages
Compare your metrics against anonymised data from businesses in your sector and region.
What is benchmarking?#
Benchmarking compares your business metrics against anonymised averages from other AskBiz users in your sector and region. If you run a retail shop in Kenya, you can see how your average basket size, margin, refund rate, and inventory turnover compare to similar Kenyan retailers. This tells you whether your numbers are strong, average, or behind โ context that raw numbers alone cannot provide.
Accessing benchmarks#
Go to Intelligence > Benchmarks. Select your sector and region. The dashboard shows key metrics side by side โ your value versus the sector average, with a percentile rank. A rank of 75th percentile means you outperform 75% of comparable businesses on that metric. Metrics include revenue per employee, gross margin, inventory days, customer retention, and more.
How anonymisation works#
All benchmark data is fully anonymised. No individual business can be identified. Data is aggregated at the sector and region level with a minimum of 20 businesses required to generate a benchmark. Your own data contributes to benchmarks for others while their data helps you. This collective intelligence gets more useful as more businesses join AskBiz.
Acting on benchmarks#
Focus on metrics where you rank below the 50th percentile โ these are your biggest improvement opportunities. Ask AskBiz: Why is my inventory turnover below the sector average? What would it take to reach the 75th percentile on margin? The AI analyses your specific data against the benchmark gaps and suggests concrete actions.
