How Template Questions Are Designed
The thinking behind template questions — why they're phrased the way they are and how to get the most from them.
Why templates matter#
The biggest barrier to getting value from AI analytics isn't the AI — it's knowing what to ask. Templates solve this by providing questions that experienced analysts would ask of your data.
Each question is designed to surface a specific, actionable insight rather than a generic overview.
Question design principles#
Template questions follow these principles:
- Specific — 'What's my best-selling product by margin?' not 'How are things going?'
- Time-bound — most questions reference a specific period (last 30 days, last quarter)
- Actionable — the answer should tell you what to do, not just what happened
- Data-dependent — questions are matched to the kind of data your business type typically has
Customising questions#
Treat template questions as a starting point. After getting an answer, follow up with:
- 'Break this down by channel'
- 'Compare to the same period last year'
- 'What should I do about this?'
- 'Show me the top 5 instead of top 10'
