Zakat Calculator Guide
How the AskBiz Zakat calculator works: how your zakat base is calculated from inventory, cash, receivables and payables, what nisab and hawl mean, and where to find it in My Business.
What Is the Zakat Calculator?#
The Zakat calculator works out your business's zakat position — inventory, cash, receivables and payables, checked against the nisab threshold — using your real AskBiz data instead of a spreadsheet. It lives in the Zakat tab of My Business and is free on every plan, including Free — no upgrade needed.
It calculates zakat on trade assets: cash, stock-in-trade at retail value, and money owed to you, less short-term business debts — at the standard rate of 2.5% once that total has stayed above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year (the hawl). It only reads business data recorded in AskBiz, so it doesn't cover personal wealth, personally-held gold or silver, agricultural zakat, or livestock zakat.
Where to Find It#
Open My Business from the main navigation — this is the page at /intelligence — then select the Zakat tab. It sits alongside Overview, CFO, Team, Logistics, Market and Actions.
Direct link: /intelligence?tab=zakat.
Ask AskBiz can't deep-link you into this tab yet the way it can for some others — open it directly from My Business rather than asking the AI chat to take you there.
How Your Zakat Base Is Calculated#
Every time you open the calculator, AskBiz pulls four figures from your live business data:
- Inventory — the retail value of your active stock (sale price × quantity on hand)
- Cash — the cash balance you've entered in your CFO cost settings. If you've never entered one, the tile shows Not set rather than treating it as zero
- Receivables — money owed to you, from your logged receivables
- Payables — money you owe, subtracted from the total. This includes any received purchase orders you haven't fully paid your supplier for yet
Your zakat base is Cash + Inventory + Receivables − Payables (floored at zero). Tap any figure to override it for this calculation — useful if a number doesn't reflect reality yet. Overrides only affect the calculation in front of you: they don't change your underlying inventory or CFO records, and they aren't remembered the next time you open the calculator unless you enter them again.
Nisab: The Threshold for Owing Zakat#
You only owe zakat once your zakat base is at or above the nisab — the minimum threshold of wealth. AskBiz uses the standard weight-based nisab: 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver, converted to your local currency using a current metal price. Silver is used by default, as it's the lower of the two thresholds.
Metal prices aren't checked automatically — click Check current price to look one up. AskBiz runs a live price search and caches the result, along with the date it was checked, so it doesn't need to look it up every time you open the page. Treat the figure as an indicative market estimate rather than an exact spot rate — if precision matters, confirm it independently.
You can switch between Gold and Silver at any time. Each metal's last-checked price is remembered separately, so switching back and forth doesn't lose either value.
Hawl: Why 'Above Nisab' Isn't the Same as 'Due'#
Being above nisab today doesn't mean zakat is due today — your zakat base needs to stay above nisab for a full lunar year (hawl, tracked as 355 days) before anything is actually owed. AskBiz tracks this automatically:
- The day your zakat base first goes above nisab, AskBiz starts the hawl clock and shows a progress bar
- If your zakat base drops back below nisab before the year is up, the clock resets — it starts again next time you cross the threshold
- Once the full hawl completes while still above nisab, the status changes to Due now and shows the amount owed (2.5% of your zakat base)
Until hawl completes, the amount shown is a live running estimate, not a due amount. The status badge tells you which state you're in: Check price to begin (nisab not yet checked), Below nisab, Above nisab (hawl running), or Due now.
Saving a Calculation and Giving to Charity#
Click Save this calculation to log a snapshot of the figures, any overrides you applied, and the resulting amount — for your own records. Each save is an independent log entry, not a running balance.
Below the calculator, AskBiz lists verified partner charities you can give to directly, filtered to your country where possible. Each entry links out to the charity's own donation page — AskBiz doesn't process the payment itself. If no partner charities are listed for your country yet, you'll see a note saying so; the directory is curated by AskBiz and is still growing.
