Setting up a kg item in inventory#

Any inventory item can be configured for weight-based selling. Open the item in /pos/inventory (or create a new one) and set the Unit field to kg.

Set the Price as the per-kilogram rate — for example, if minced beef sells at KSh 600 per kilogram, enter KSh 600. This is the rate the system uses to calculate the line total when the cashier enters the weight.

All other fields (SKU, category, stock tracking, low-stock threshold) work the same as for unit items. Save the item — it appears on the sell screen immediately.

Entering weight on the sell screen#

When a cashier taps a kg item on the product grid, a decimal quantity input appears in the basket instead of the standard whole-number input. The cashier reads the weight from their scale and types it in:

  • 0.5 for half a kilogram
  • 1.25 for one and a quarter kilograms
  • 0.375 for 375 grams

The line total recalculates in real time as the cashier types — no need to confirm before seeing the result. If the amount looks correct, the cashier proceeds to payment as normal. There is no mode switch or separate screen; the flow is identical to a regular sale.

How receipts show kg items#

On printed and digital receipts, kg items display the weight and per-kg rate clearly:

```
Minced Beef x 0.75 kg KSh 450.00
@ KSh 600.00 / kg
```

The per-kg reference line lets customers verify the arithmetic. WhatsApp receipts use the same format. If you have multiple kg items in a single sale, each appears as a separate line with its own weight and rate.

Stock tracking for kg items#

If stock tracking is enabled for a kg item, the quantity sold is deducted from the stock total in kg. Selling 0.75 kg from a 5 kg stock leaves 4.25 kg.

Low-stock alerts work in kg — set a threshold in kg (e.g. alert when stock falls below 2 kg). When restocking, use Add mode to add the delivery weight, or Set mode to override to a specific total. Both modes accept decimal values.

If stock tracking is disabled for a kg item (common for items where you don't need precise stock counts), the weight input and live recalculation still work — tracking is optional.
